List of Birds Protected Under MBTA Expands

posted Mar 3, 2010, 10:10 AM by Mike Green
On March 1 the FWS released an updated list of birds protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.  There are now 1007 species on the list, 175 more than the 832 on the previous version, last updated in 1985.  The update is required because of name changes, some range extensions across the US-Mexican border, and corrections to the older list.  Significantly for our partners in Hawaii, the honeycreepers are now officially protected under MBTA, because recent studies show honeycreepers to be derivatives of an ancestral fringillid, and all finches are protected by our convention with Mexico.  Read the FWS newsrelease, or better yet, a copy of the Federal Register notice for all the listing details.
